The Pogues’ ‘Fairytale of New York’ Soars in 2023 Vinyl Sales Following Shane MacGowan’s Passing

In a touching tribute to the late Shane MacGowan, The Pogues’ enduring Christmas classic, ‘Fairytale of New York,’ has secured a spot among the best-selling vinyl singles of 2023 in the UK, just over a month after the legendary singer and songwriter’s passing.

The iconic track has claimed the No.10 spot on the coveted list, rubbing shoulders with esteemed musical acts such as The Beatles, boygenius, Aphex Twin, The Rolling Stones, the Sex Pistols (with three appearances), Lana Del Rey, and Wham!

Originally released as a single featuring the enchanting vocals of Kirsty MacColl in 1987, ‘Fairytale of New York’ later became a centerpiece on The Pogues’ third album, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, released the following year. In a special commemorative gesture, the band released the timeless holiday anthem as a limited edition 7″ record late last year, with all proceeds going to support the Dublin Simon Community.

As fans continue to celebrate the legacy of Shane MacGowan and The Pogues, this recent recognition in vinyl sales underscores the enduring popularity and cultural impact of ‘Fairytale of New York.’ The song’s timeless narrative and emotive melodies continue to resonate with audiences, solidifying its place as an enduring classic and a fitting tribute to the late, great Shane MacGowan.
